Importance of Headlight maintenance

Headlight lenses can deteriorate over time. They can become bumpy due to scratches caused by sand and pebbles on the road. They can also crack which will allow water to flow into the headlight. The reflector, made of vaporized aluminum deposited in a thin layer on metal, glass or plastic substrate, can become dirty, oxidized or burnt and lose its brightness. This reduces the reflective strength of the light.
The entire sealed beam unit will have to be replaced if the filament burns out. That’s because the sealed beam headlights are integrated. If bulbs of higher-than-specified wattage are installed, it can cause damage to the vehicle’s electronic system which could be expensive to replace. The headlight focus must also be properly checked and adjusted frequently to avoid misaimed lights to on-coming vehicles.
